Security agencies and community stakeholders in Anambra State have intensified advocacy against cultism, drug abuse, and other social vices among young people, urging them to embrace responsible living for a safer society. The initiative formed the highlight of a one-day youth summit organised by the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN), Anaocha Chapter, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Swisspoint Hotel, Agulu. The summit, themed "Combating Drug Abuse and Cultism Among the Youth for a Safer Society," brought together representatives of the Anambra State Police Command, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and other key stakeholders. Speaking during the engagement, the Police highlighted the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) -- a non-kinetic initiative of the Nigeria Police Force aimed at sensitising young people on the dangers and long-term consequences of cultism, drug abuse, and related criminal activities. Participants at the summit emphasised that addressing the rising challenge of drug abuse and cultism requires collective responsibility involving security agencies, community leaders, parents, teachers, and the youths themselves. They urged young people to shun criminal tendencies and instead pursue legitimate opportunities that will contribute positively to their personal development and the growth of society. The event also featured the testimony of a survivor of drug addiction who shared his experience to caution youths against the destructive impact of substance abuse. Video documentaries highlighting the devastating effects of drug addiction on individuals and families were also screened. Stakeholders noted that such engagements remain crucial in strengthening community awareness and fostering a culture of lawfulness, discipline, and responsible citizenship among the youth in Anambra State. The advocacy forms part of ongoing efforts by the Police and partner agencies to promote a safer and more secure environment across communities in the state.
